Subject: My father who is still alive was a fighter-bomber-pilot who flew 71 odd miraculous missions over northern Italy. I am in possession of his 2 logbooks.

 

Mission 40 on March 6^th 1945 which was to “D.B. FACTORY IN PARMA” reads:

 

VAN REENEN WHO LED OUR SHOW GOT A VERY NICE HIT RESULTING IN A BIG EXPLOSION. I ALSO GOT A D/H – WE THEN STRAFFED AND DESTROYED 1 MT S.W. OF REGGIO – IT JUST DISINTEGRATED! ENEMY A/C WERE BEING REPORTED ALL THE TIME. SAW ON WAY HOME TWO A/C BEARING DOWN ON US FROM BEHIND SO WE DID A SMART TURNABOUT – MAYBE OUR FIRST FIGHT – BUT THEY TURNED OUT TO BE SOME STUPID YANKS! VAN’S A/C STARTED POURING SMOKE AND HE HAD TO BALE IN ENEMY LINES – I WAS JUST NEXT TO HIM WHEN HE BALED – SMART!!

 

What if anything do you know about the invasion of Normandy that began late June 5^th 1944 nothing more than a “show of force” to let the weaker nations of the world know we hadn’t given up on “gunboat diplomacy” versus a rather botched “strategic military operation” costing tens of thousands of casualties that we never seem to “get enough of”?

 

Bear in mind very well trained fighter-bomber-pilots like my dad while risking life and limb to dive-bomb the crap out of the Nazi bastards, finding the time not only to play rugby but when on one occasion bombing wrong targets, “SHAMBLES DE – LUX” as they did back on February 7^th 1945 on their 25^th mission/operation their CO’s gave Van as in Van Reenen, my dad and a pilot whose first name was John the week off in Canne in the south of France but I think it is fair to say that the Dakota they few could have been loaded up with enough bombs to destroy possibly all the Nazi Concentration Camps so long as they carried extra tanks of fuel, not to mention how very energized the likes of my very Jewish father to “chance their luk” [sic] bombing the likes of Auschwitz to smithereens were it not for the fact that their Commanding Officers “acted quite oblivious” to the carnage of the death camps that kept the ovens frying up some 10,000 of us Jewish people each and every day all the while detailed information was reaching the common man in the street as far away I suppose as Wall Street that not only were the likes of Auschwitz no “rest camp” but Hitler was well prior to D-Day on his last legs, his engineers buried deep, thinking of what else besides for running out of fuel were Nazi fighters being blasted to pieces on runways?

 

BTW, my wife, Marie Dion Gevisser’s father was a tail gunner in a bomber that went down on approach after a late night bombing run over Germany, all the crew with the exception of Jonny Dion were killed.
