Dear Friends, Supporters and others,

I have decided not to go forward with my plans to run for the Del Mar City Council.  I especially want to thank all of you who stepped forward and signed my nominating paper, the first step in beginning the process.  Twenty signatures were needed and I obtained thirty, including Pam’s and my own.  To those early supporters, I truly feel that I have let you down after you were so willing to work to get me elected.  Thanks for all of your encouragement!

The process of transitioning from a private individual to a public figure has been very hard for me, especially when I have always tried to see everyone as my friend.  To really fight the battle, positions have to be taken, toes have to be stepped on and feelings are surely to get hurt.  This is really not what I am about but it is a necessary step when the open seat is going to be seriously contested by others who do not want to give up power.  After much deliberation, tossing and turning in the middle of the night and outright indecision, I concluded that this fight is not worth pursuing– especially against a candidate (Terry Sinnott) with whom I have very much in common concerning public policy positions.

It became evident early on - with the publication of the Bud Emerson piece in the Del Mar Times - that my wife’s position, not my abilities or my service to my community, was surely to be used against me.  This type of warfare is despicable but some in our community will reach to any depths to get their way and therefore I should have expected this type of treatment.  Pam especially did not deserve these attacks and I find his actions unforgivable.  But Bud’s letter did play a part in my ultimate decision not to file.  I want only the best for our community and will continue to make my issues known from the sidelines of private life here in Del Mar.

Because my Email list is surely incomplete, please pass this message on to others you know in our community.  Enjoy the day here in beautiful Del Mar.
