Danna – I have just risen and your communication definitely brings a smile to my face.

I have tho, been reflecting on Bryan’s communication ever since he sent it on Monday and will be responding hopefully within the next 24 hours.

I caution u to reflect on your words “these are the best numbers you have seen come out of the café and we have profited £4000 ponds more than Valerie” since I have no idea how much “profit” any of the former owners made since I never saw or asked for their sales and expenses.

And remember 3 things, one is that profit is not simply “Sales minus Expenses” and second, there is really nothing simple about calculating in to the equation a number when one lives off the business and third, one has to constantly compute what is referred to as “opportunity cost” the “cost of the next best alternative”.

By Marie and I choosing to have the 2 of u run the operation and live on the premises there was a cost associated that I doubt is part of your “profit” calculation, then again if you were not happy with your personal surroundings then you would not likely wake up with a smile on your face each and every day and would likely have more “sic” [sic] days.

So when u say, “We did it on our own” I can understand and applaud the 2 of u being very proud of yourselves since no one else certainly since we have owned the business-property has produced anything for us but heartache. Your success tho is something we can “crow about” and you can bet your bottom pound I will leverage your experiences from now until kingdom come.

The economics of the deal with the 2 of u never made sense from the start but as u will recall this “not all about profit”, something we spelled out to the 2 of u right from the start.

You had mentioned in your previous email preparing a business plan a matter I will touch on when replying to Bryan’s last email but I think u would do yourself justice by examining ever so carefully the E-mail Marie and I sent u back on April 26th which included 10 “pointers”. U can c the entire email in the previous hyperlink and I will make my comments in red

1.    Hyperlinked is the Ccrest logo. U need to have business cards printed and the outside sign redone, remembering your menus act as flyers carefully handed out. You will need a professional to look at the fonts and see what works. The first C in Ccrest needs to be bigger font size, bold lettering. Choose from the four different color variations which ones you prefer, the sun is yellow, everything outlined in dark blue and a lighter blue as the main color. Marie feels that the “A” would work for a business card and “B” for the sign outside or “B” for a card depending on the cost. For business cards the address will have be under the name or to the right in a smaller font. Please let us see a final rendering before going to print and if you have questions don’t hesitate to call or email this is top priority. We never heard back from u on any of the above and to this day do not know if u got business cards or had the outside sign redone.

2.    Look into the alcohol licensing and then to offer wine tasting along with say a barbeque as a special evening meal, not forgetting that possibly having one organic item on the menu may become the trend setter. Again, the deafening silences spoke volumes.

3.    Bed and breakfast permit, something I will help you look into. I suggested that u speak with our neighbor Mike who runs a bed and breakfast and was the former bank manager of the local Nat West Bank.

4.    Local advertising, working with local marketing people who derive benefit by visiting often with you bringing their customers for special treatment. Again, the deafening silences spoke volumes.

5.    Other Bed And breakfasts willing to co-promote not just in Minehead but as far away as London and beyond. The same thing again.

6.    Go to Dunster Castle and introduce yourself to Joni who has the pottery store. Same thing.

7.    Use email to selectively target new customers-clients not forgetting to invite the locals including our attorney Mr. McLusky to taste the wares. Same thing.

8.    Make yourself known at the train station both in Minehead and every stop along the way, all roads, remember, lead to Rome. Same thing.

9.    Don’t be afraid to offer free deserts. Same thing.

10.Each week list what has been done providing us with succinct progress reports. Same thing.

The most important thing in this world besides for not simply taking up space is to teach and that is what we have attempted to do with the 2 of u. The fact that u did far better than anyone else we gave the same opportunity, remember this is a one of a kind location, does not mean you were constantly aware of the “opportunity costs” and had you hired good help and had you followed our marketing suggestions be4 u opened the café to mention little once again of the 10 pointers being tossed in the wastepaper basket I would be willing to bet my bottom dollar you would have every reason under the sun to be a whole lot prouder of your accomplishments.

I am taking nothing away from you by spelling this all out crystal clear in simple English, on the contrary I am doing u once again the favor while pointing out time and again making one’s way in this world is not “all about profit.”

You would also do yourself a good turn while helping me out to pay attention to what is happening on the Revlon Corporation Yahoo Message Board and provide me from time to time with your feedback.

I won’t wish you “luck” in Taunton simply because I don’t believe in so-called luck. It only takes one coincidence before it is no longer a coincidence, i.e. there are no coincidences in this “dog eat god” [sic] world and by implication design is everywhere.

U may leave your belongings at Ccrest just in case things don’t work out in Taunton after giving it your best.

What goes around comes around but with a vengeance.

Take care,

Gary

I do believe that it is safe to say that these are the best numbers you have seen come out of the cafe and we have profited £4000 ponds more than Valerie. We did it on our own and will forward you our ideas for the next season should you not sell. Also winter ental of the property is an option. Please let us know where we stand and the ideas you and Marie have for the Cafe. Bryan and I are confident that this is mearly the start and with a little backing and updating anything is possible.

I would also like to know if me leaving my belongings at the cafe until the 15th of November will be a problem as I have no where else to store them while I am away with the family? Also, we have £910.93 for you which we will drop off at Mr. McLusky's for August and September which includes two months property tax of £100 each month.

We have set up a foundation on which anything can be built. we look forward to seeing what you plans are.

Send our hellos and smiles to marie and the kids. Be sure to keep a littl eof it for yourself though. And i would personally like to take this opportunity, as you said i would in the begining, to thank you and marie for this opportunity and all the lifes lessons!

will keep in touch...wish me luck in Taunton!

-Danna- May the sun keep shinning on your face and your smile be the first thing to reflect it!
